A backpack has many different names. The most common name that you may have heard is a rucksack, also written as rucksac, the first being a more popular version. The name, backpack, originated in the States in the beginning of the 20th century. Prior to that a backpack was known as a moneybag or a packsack. The word rucksack is a derivative from Germanic languages and mainly used in Europe and later in the US among the military.
Another name for a backpack is a knapsack. This word was used mostly in Canada only until the middle of last century.
Haversack, also of Germanic origin, was a small oat bag used to carry feed for the horses.
